JOB Posting – Temporary Street Outreach Worker

Nelson Community Services is seeking two temporary part-time Street Outreach Workers. The incumbent in this position engages with adults, youth, and families who rely on Nelson’s ‘street culture’ to live and survive. They provide support and practical assistance designed to meet immediate needs, including housing and health related issues. Working closely with police, mental health workers and Drop-in Centre staff and volunteers, they make referrals to needed services, and support people to move towards increased safety and stability. They also promote understanding among all community stakeholders about the target population and street-related challenges.

Both positions start immediately for a period of three months with the possibility of extension; one position is 26 hours per week and the other is 21 hours per week.

Please note: Applicants may only apply for one position. The intention is to have two staff working together, not one person filling both roles.

Qualifications:

Diploma in the human services or a related field or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Experience:

A minimum of two (2) years’ recent, related experience in working with marginalized and vulnerable adults and youth who rely on Nelson Street culture to live and survive.

Other Information:

  1. Must be willing to work flexible hours to meet program demands.
  2. Must hold a valid First Aid Certificate.
  3. Must hold a valid BC Class V Driver’s license and have access to a safe, reliable, well-maintained, clean vehicle with appropriate insurance.
  4. Must carry agency-supplied cell phone, programmed to emergency numbers, during working hours.
  5. Criminal Record Check required.
  6. The position is entitled to an additional 10.6% in lieu of annual leave and statutory holidays as per the Collective Agreement.
  7. The position requires continued Union membership with BCGEU.
  8. The wage is consistent with Wage Grid 12 JJEP [$29.17 to 33.49] of the Collective Agreement.

JOB Posting – Child and Youth Community Mental Health Therapist

Nelson Community Services is seeking a full-time Child and Youth Community Mental Health Therapist. This position is 3 days per week (21hrs). The incumbent in this position provides clinical counselling and support services to children and youth under age 19 with severe mental, emotional, and behavioural problems, and their caregivers, that seek to increase stability in the lives of children and youth that exhibit these behaviours.  This permanent position starts on or about December 18, 2025.

The Role
As a Child and Youth Mental Health (CYMH) Clinician, you’ll support the mental wellness of children, youth, and families through direct clinical services such as intake, assessment, treatment, suicide risk assessment, safety planning, and crisis intervention for ages 0–19. You’ll collaborate with professionals including educators, healthcare providers, Indigenous service organizations, and community agencies to deliver wrap around care. This role is ideal for those who value meaningful client relationships, teamwork, and lifelong learning.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in Counselling, Social Work, Educational Counselling, Clinical Counselling, Clinical Psychology or Child and Youth Care or comparable graduate degree at the Master’s level in a similar subject may be considered. NOTE: If your degree was obtained outside of Canada, you need to confirm it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES). Applicants near completion of their Master’s Degree may be considered at a lower classification.

Experience:

Minimum of one (1) years’ recent related experience providing clinical counselling to children and youth experiencing mental health issues, and their caregivers.

  5. May be required to work with families and children and youth who are distressed and facing challenges which may occasionally involve exposure to unpleasant situations or behaviour with angry, abusive, or abused clients; exposure to hazards from frequently working around parents and/or children in crisis who may display volatile behaviour.
  6. The position is entitled to annual leave, sick leave, and extended health benefits as per the Collective Agreement.

  8. The wage is consistent with Wage Grid 16P ($44.54 to $54.52) as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
  9. Must be willing to work flexible hours to meet program needs – evening work may be required.
