Position: FTE position .8 – 28 hours per week

About Our Organization

Nelson Community Services supports families, youth, and individuals in the vibrant city of Nelson and area, situated in the West Kootenays of BC. Objectives of this Role

  • Provide strategic and innovative leadership to the organization, mobilizing required resources, and ensuring best practices for quality service delivery.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with a governing board of directors, committees as well as funders, community partners and local organizations to achieve agency’s mission and strategic priorities.
  • Work collaboratively with Management Team to oversee the daily operations of the organization, providing executive direction of all program strategy, compliance, quality assurance, and program efficiency.
  • Identify and implement staffing requirements for efficient operations, maintaining a strong culture and work climate that attracts and retains staff, and drives organization’s mission
  • Coordinate and monitor  the financial management of $2.2 million annual budget
  • Comply with all provincial and federal legislation and contractual obligations
  • Represent the organization and increase awareness by being a spokesperson within the community

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements operational, management, and human resource policies.
  • Undertakes contract negotiations and program proposals with funders.
  • Develops contracts for services with consultants and vendors as needed.
  • Oversees all areas of risk management to ensure the organization, its staff, clients, and volunteers are sufficiently protected from harm, liability, and other claims.
  • Ensures that all services are delivered in accordance with contract obligations, agency policies and procedures, accreditation guidelines, and within established best practices and appropriate legislation.
  • Coordinates the accreditation review processes; oversees and monitors all performance quality improvement activities.
  • Ensures the development and implementation of agency mission statement, goals, and Board policies and procedures.
  • Represents the agency at community and fund-raising events or other official functions; manages all agency media relations.
  • Promotes community and social sector development by participating in various related groups and activities outside the agency

Skills and Qualifications

  • 5+ years of senior level management experience, ideally in the rural, non-profit social services sector
  • Relevant postgraduate (Master’s) degree. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Strong strategic planning skills — must be able to connect vision, mission and strategic goals and develop work plans to achieve them
  • Strong leadership and organizational development skills; experience with capacity building and change management processes
  • Strong HR skills, experience within a union environment and navigating complex HR dynamics
  • Demonstration of a commitment to support equity, diversity, inclusion, and indigenization in the workplace
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, for e.g. proposal development, report writing, and grant writing essential
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: proven ability to build and foster staff relations and stakeholder relationships and to work with a governance model
  • Broad knowledge and experience in community development initiatives and social programs/services
  • Experience and knowledge of financial management, administration and program management, development and evaluation of programs and accreditation processes
  • Proactively address challenges in the internal and external environment to protect the agency’s interests and programs
  • In-depth knowledge of best practices pertaining to a variety of program service delivery models.

Nelson Community Services (NCS) is recruiting for a Clinical Supervisor for fifteen hours per month to support our seasoned team of counsellors. The work will involve regular clinical supervision and supporting program development with your clinical knowledge.

Donate to Nelson Street Outreach Team

The Nelson Street Outreach Team has been helping to support those most vulnerable in our community since the project began in 2016.  Jeremy Kelly and Ryall Giuliano were part of the original pilot project and remain dedicated members of the team today. Lyann Hunter is our newest member and has been working with us for over a year. The team works collaboratively with other social service organizations, police departments, healthcare services, community members, and business owners. Jeremy, Ryall, and Lyann have a substantial combined background of previous social work experience, post-secondary education and training, and lived experience. They are passionate and committed to their work of serving the community of Nelson and the surrounding area.

Your donations support the ongoing work of the team who have been on the streets everyday through the pandemic and in all weathers supporting our vulnerable community members.
