Job Posting Executive Director



Nelson Community Services (NCS) is seeking an Executive Director (ED) to lead an engaging team of approximately 30, including staff, management, and volunteers. The ED is responsible for the management of a $2.3 million annual budget in the growth of an exciting range of programs that support families, youth, and individuals. The successful candidate will provide strategic and innovative leadership to the organization, mobilizing required resources, and ensuring best practices for quality service delivery. We are seeking a leader with a proven track record demonstrating these values and skills, and who can work effectively and collaboratively with staff and a governing Board as well as funders, community partners, and local organizations to achieve the agency’s mission and strategic priorities.

About Our Organization

Nelson Community Services supports families, youth, and individuals in the vibrant city of Nelson and area, situated in the West Kootenays of BC. We acknowledge that the land upon which we offer our services is the traditional territory of the peoples who have lived here for thousands of years —the Ktunaxa, the Sylix, and the Sinixt.

Nelson Community Services is an accredited, registered non-profit society, which is governed by a Board of Directors and led by the Executive Director. Our work includes the operation of two housing programs — Aimee Beaulieu Transition House and Cicada Place for youth, along with various counselling and support programs. We collaborate and partner with an extensive network of organizations, businesses, funders and public agencies, including leadership of several local and regional development networks. Position Details:

This is a .80 FTE salaried position. The salary range is $64,000 – $75,200 per year. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.



  • A relevant post graduate (Master’s) degree. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • A minimum of 5 years of senior level management and leadership experience, ideally in the rural, non-profit social services sector


Essential Skills:

Leadership and Organization Development

  • Strong leadership and organizational development skills
  • Demonstrated experience with capacity building
  • Strong strategic planning skills — must be able to connect vision, mission and strategic goals and develop work plans to achieve them
  • Excellent working knowledge of privacy and confidentiality legislation
  • Proven contract management skills

Administration, Operations, and Communication

  • Proven ability to organize and undertake a wide variety of administrative and operational tasks
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, including proposal development, report writing, and grant writing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; proven ability to build and foster staff and stakeholder relations

Finance, Risk Management, Resource Development, and Governance

  • Superior skills in financial management, including strategy, planning, and analysis
  • Proactively address challenges in the internal and external environment to protect the agency’s interests and programs
  • Excellent skills in identifying resource needs, fund development, and engaging donors
  • Experience working with a non-profit governance Board of Directors

Human Resources

  • Superior skills in human resource management; experience with managing and leading in a unionized work setting would be an asset

Planning and Development

  • Demonstration of a commitment to supporting equity, diversity, inclusion and indigenization of the workplace
  • Broad knowledge and experience in development of social programs, project management, and community development initiatives
  • In-depth knowledge of best practices pertaining to a variety of program service delivery models
  • Experience with development and evaluation of programs and accreditation processes
